
Chilies, whose scientific name is Capsicum annum belongs to the family Solanaceae. It has several common names such as : capsicum, red pepper, bell peppers, wrinkled peppers, cluster peppers, etc. As per report, this plant was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in America and later introduced it in Europe in 1493.Chilli plants are of different species and their varieties are of both annuals and perennials. These have small to medium sized dark leaves. Chilies are of variable shapes, sizes and colors such as green, red, orange, purple, yelllow, etc. Apache, Cayenne, Etna, Hot Wax, Fuego, Thai Hot Dragon, Super chili, etc are all good varieties of chilli to grow.Generally ,we use chilies in fresh, dried or powdered form to give hot and spicy taste in our everyday food. It is used to make many pickles. And if we view in many restaurants , many new sorts of chilly dishes are preferred more these days.
Chilies are preferred much and no doubt, is enriched with many benefits, which are shocking for us to know. Since, chilies posses more amount of vitamin C , it helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents or develop more immunity in the body. Chilies contain more vitamin A nutrients and thus makes eyes healthy and provides proper vision to the people of all ages. Chilies helps in keeping hair and skin parts more active, glowing and strong as they can maintain collagen in their own due to the more amount of vitamin C presence .It is useful for decreasing blood pressure. It supports in red blood cell formation, repairs the tissue and keeps the bone healthy. The most important usefulness we obtain is that it helps more in proper digestion process. Other benefits we can include are that it delays ageing, prevents constipation, resists stomach cancer and other stomach related problems, supports more for weight loss as it burns more amount of fats in the body. Chilies are good preference for making our mood good or improving our mood.
Heat is what chilly plants love. They need 20 degree celsius for germination and upto 30 degree celsius or more for the ripening process. They can be grown in full sun , though, some afternoon shade is also beneficial to give. Chilies can be grown anywhere, meaning to refer in a nursery or at home. Morever, it can be grown from seed or by propagation method.
Today, we are learning tips about growing chilies at home in a container from healthy and over-ripened chilly itself. Firstly, we need to select a container in our own choice and then make some holes to drain water out. Then , potting media should be made ready. For potting media, we can use 60 percent normal garden soil, 20 percent river sand,20 percent organic compost and mix it well. Then, we should take some healthy and over-riped chilies and cut them in two pieces from the middle of each. After this, we can simply keep the cut piece on the potting mixture or we can take out the seeds from each of the cut piece and put them in the mixture of the container. After this, we should cover the seeds with a thin layer of potting mixture and then add some water with a little force. Remember we should keep the container in a shade and keep moist all the time. After 6-8days , we can see little proggression i.e seeds start to germinate in smaller leaves. Upto 45 days, it grows largely and in 60 days around, we can get a harvest (chilly outside).
For getting better germination from seeds, we can adopt some tips such as soaking chili seeds in warm water at night before sowing or keeping chili seeds inside the plastic and leaving in the air for some days before sowing. Seeds should be grown in area where sunlight comes frequently. After 2 leaves have developed fully in a small pot from the seed, we can transfer it to a larger pot carefully , without distracting any parts of the plant. We should water regularly, but not make in water-logged condition.
These are some tips for growing chilies in a pot. Its easier to carry and brighten up our gardens, varendahs, and wherever we love to keep it.
